He didn't stay in the nexus after the encounter left him all tense and anxious, two sensations he'd pretty much been hoping to avoid for at least a little while longer while he got things back to normal. He didn't even bother finishing the rest of his errands; there was no time for that.

Instead, he goes straight back home. The second he sets foot in the house, he senses around for Harvestman's presence, hoping like hell that he won't have to track him down anywhere else.

"John?"

Harvestman grimaces. Even he could miss the mark on who was or wasn't a vampire in a nexus, the nature of the place threw him off. A good Hunter never missed. "And?"

[stormbelow]

"And nothing. I told you, she has good instincts but she didn't panic, she didn't treat me as an immediate threat, just as a stranger who could be." He wrinkles his nose with displeasure. "Then Gabriel got involved and made me something relevant. If I'd known it was her, honestly, I... wouldn't have stuck around as long as I did."

[fuckvampires]

"Got involved?"

"He was texting her. Told her to ask my name, when I wouldn't tell her she took my picture and sent it to him." Which still annoys him, whenever he thinks about it. "He told her I was okay, she wanted to know why, but she said that she doubted he would explain if she asked."

His mouth twitched. Smiling might lead to hysteria, but the annoyance in Arashi's voice almost made it worth it. His explanation didn't clarify anything about the exchange - his mental image was blank, lacking in movement and sound a picture couldn't provide. "Smart."

Arashi just sighs. It's not that he's purposefully trying to be vague... well, he sort of is. This situation isn't exactly one he feels comfortable with.

"You can tell she's well trained. But I'd be willing to bet she doesn't always get the whole story and she knows it. Not surprising. John, you should see her for yourself." He rubs Harvestman's hand again. "You don't want it to happen by accident."

He twists his hands together, closing his eyes. It was either that or press into them like he did when stressed. That would alarm Arashi. "I'd have to talk to Gabriel."

[stormbelow]

"Why?"

"Why?" It's clear from the confusion in Harvestman's expression that he trusts Gabriel far more than Arashi does. (The tables that could be turned on him when that was pointed out might best be left for later.)

"He's the one who can arrange that without things going to shit. She obviously trusts him."

[stormbelow]

The irritation is starting to bleed back into Arashi's tone; it's mostly because of Gabriel, but not entirely. "Or, you could get up and walk through a door and talk to your daughter. Trust is relative, John. Whether or not things go to shit is pretty much going to be on you and Charlie."

[fuckvampires]

"She's a Hunter, Arashi. That ain't gonna go so fucking well."

There's the anger again. He's not good enough at biting it down. "I don't fucking know if I can even talk to her."

[stormbelow]

Neither, at this point, is Arashi.

"Says who? You've never met her! How do you know what she'll do or what she'll think? She managed to get through an entire pseudo-conversation with me without so much as calling me an asshole, and I'm pretty sure that's more than you could say when we first met. I get that it's terrifying and it's difficult and it's going to change everything. I get that. And I'm going to help you get through it but it's time to do something. Your excuses haven't changed, but neither has the fact that you have a child who deserves to know you -- or are you just going to let Gabriel and Brisbane continue to dictate everything that happens in her life and yours?"

[fuckvampires]

"Don't fucking yell at me, you act like this is so fucking easy! I'm not you, alright? I'm not some goddamn prick who's had three hundred years to get over my shit!" He points a finger at Arashi's face, hovering just over his nose. "And you're still an asshole."

[stormbelow]

"Yeah, and good thing, too, otherwise shit might never get done," Arashi snorts, pushing Harvestman's hand out of his face. "If I thought this was easy, I wouldn't be sitting here right now. But you keep putting off these important things that you say you're going to do because you expect them to get easier, and they're not, all right? There are ways to ease into it and you don't even have to start by meeting her face to face, the girl has a damned cellphone, but one way or the other you just need to power through it."

"Fuck you. Just... fuck you." He pushes himself off the couch to pace, rubbing his eyes.

[stormbelow]

Arashi drops his head back with a frustrated growl, throwing up his hands. "God! Fine. You want me to mind my own goddamn business, then you can do whatever the hell you want on your own. Stop doing that to yourself."

[fuckvampires]

"I didn't say that." He curls his lip, giving Arashi a look. "Stop doing what, getting angry every time you yell at me?"

[stormbelow]

"Stop rubbing your eyes, don't think I don't see you doing that."

[fuckvampires]

He hisses, dropping his hands. "So you're not gonna care except when you care?"

[stormbelow]

"When did I ever say I wasn't going to care?"

[fuckvampires]

He can't push at his eyes anymore or punch holes in things, despite the temptation. He leans against a wall and sighs, bracing his face against his hands. "This is stupid."

[stormbelow]

Arashi doesn't answer that, just watches him with a frown.

[fuckvampires]

"I hate doing this, Arashi. I hate it. I hate fighting with you." His gaze wonders, and he sighs. "It ain't helping."

[stormbelow]

He starts to answer, but abruptly thinks better of it and covers his eyes with his hands instead. After a few seconds of visibly gathering his temper backward and already feeling the migraine beginning to build for his troubles, he lifts his eyes to Harvestman again with a very heavy sigh.

"All right. What do you want me to do?"

Harvestman lifts his hands a few times, only to drop them in frustration. He stares at the floor for a moment, then the ceiling. Finally, he lowers his head to meet Arashi's eyes.

"I swore I wouldn't get into fights with you, if you came back. I swore to every goddamn god I don't believe in, if you came back I'd do a lot of things. I wouldn't fight with you. I'd stop sleeping around. I'd do - fuck."

He folds his arms tight, gaze drifting back to the floor. "I gotta talk to Gabriel anyhow. You can come. I'd like you to come, but you don't gotta."
